An arborist plays an important role in keeping our environment healthy and beautiful. Whether they’re pruning branches, detecting tree illnesses, or planting new saplings, these specialists keep trees strong, healthy, and safe.
However, many people are unaware of what an arborist does, which is why we compiled some fun facts for you to discover.
- Arborists Are Outdoor Adventurers: Arborists spend a lot of their time climbing trees, wielding ropes, and balancing on branches. Many of them utilize various rope and climbing techniques to securely explore the treetops, and since some trees can reach heights of almost 300 feet, it’s good for them to be prepared.
- Arborists Are Detectives: An arborist needs to know how to inspect trees for illnesses, infestations, and structural issues. They use their knowledge and skills to solve a variety of puzzles to ensure the tree gets the best possible care.
- Arboriculture Has Been Around for Years: The title “arborist” is newer than the study of arboriculture. In fact, this study is an ancient one that can be traced back to civilizations such as Egypt and China, where trees were planted and maintained for shade, food, and sacred purposes.
- Arborists Use Specialized Equipment: Specialized climbing gear is needed to securely scale trees. An arborist likely uses a harness, helmet, ropes, and carabiners, among other things, to ensure their safety even when they’re operating high above the ground.
- Arborists Can Be Certified: It takes both skill and knowledge to be certified as an arborist. That certification comes from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Additionally, to become a Certified Arborist (CA), the arborist must have over three years of experience and pass a written test.
